It is always heartwarming to hear from your maid of honor and best man as they give toasts at your reception. But…we’ve all been there when the toasts just bomb. Here are some tips for wedding toasts + some info that you can pass along to your wedding party (& family) for giving the best wedding toast ever.
TIP ONE. Leave the parents and/or open mic for the rehearsal dinner. Typically there is more time for family and friends to share their warm wishes the night before instead of cutting into your dance time at the reception.
TIP TWO. Set a time limit. Some people get long-winded when they get a mic in their hands and the full attention of the room. 3 minutes max is great amount of time to send all their love to the newlyweds.
TIP THREE. If you are giving the toast remember these key points:
>> Avoid inside stories – they are only funny to you and one other person. If it has to be explained, then it isn’t the right story.
>> Introduce yourself and how you know the couple.
>> Choose a sweet, short story that conveys your relationship and love for the couple.
>> Be funny, but not vulgar.
>> Have a few friends listen to your speech beforehand to give you honest feedback.
>> Don’t wing it! Practice your toast, but keep it relaxed and heartfelt.
>> Give the newlyweds well wishes.
TIP FOUR. Don’t worry about passing out drinks to all of the guests beforehand. Simply have the emcee announce for guests to pick up a drink because toasts are coming up.
TIP FIVE. Have the toasts earlier in the reception timeline so the number of consumed alcoholic beverages is at a minimum.
TIP SIX. Think about where you and the speaker are standing in the room and what is in the backdrop. It seems like a small thing, but can make for better photos if planned before.
TIP SEVEN. Consider what you and your spouse will be toasting with – whether it’s custom glassware or a beer/cocktail/champagne. Again, it will be showing in the photos.
We wish you all the best in your new life together! Happy toasting!
